The Pappas Story: From Humble Beginnings to a Seafood Empire
Mark Pappas, born in 1932 in Velvendos, Northern Greece, learned early on the values of hard work, humble service, and personal integrity. In 1956, he came to the United States in search of the American Dream. With no money and limited English, Mark settled in Baltimore with his uncle’s family and began to carve out a name for himself.
By 1961, Mark had learned English, become a proud U.S. citizen, and saved enough money to buy the Mount Vernon Restaurant with a partner. Located in downtown Baltimore, this was where Mark developed his passion for seafood and a commonsense approach to customer service: provide delicious, high-quality food at a fair price, and customers will keep coming back.
By the early 70s, Mark, now with a beautiful wife and three small children, was ready to set out on his own in Parkville, Baltimore County. He took over Wargo’s Western Steak House & Stag Bar, renamed it Pappas Restaurant & Sports Bar, and developed a diverse menu that included a wide selection of steak, pasta, and fresh seafood entrees. Among these, his unique eight-ounce heavenly crab cake quickly became a standout. Word spread, and soon the restaurant’s customer base grew, becoming a beloved local staple.
In 2010, Mark’s son Steve took the helm and expanded the family’s culinary empire to Glen Burnie in Anne Arundel County, and then to Cockeysville in 2014. Today, the Pappas legacy continues, bringing people together with delicious meals that celebrate both tradition and innovation.
