As we sit here, reflecting on the Pappas legacy of over 50 years, we realized we'd love to tell you the story about Mark Pappas and why he knows a thing or two about building a culinary empire from scratch.
Born in 1932 in Velvendos, a small town in Northern Greece, Mark Pappas learned the value of hard work, humble service, and personal integrity from a young age. In 1956, he set out to pursue the American Dream, arriving in the United States with no money and no English. But that didn't stop him. With the help of his uncle's family, he settled in Baltimore, learned the language, and became a proud citizen by 1961.
Mark's entrepreneurial spirit soon led him to buy the Mount Vernon Restaurant with a partner, where he developed a passion for seafood and a customer-centric approach: serve high-quality food at a fair price, and they'll come back for more. And come back they did!
Fast forward to the early 1970s, Mark was ready to strike out on his own. He took over Wargo's Western Steak House & Stag Bar in Parkville, Baltimore County, and transformed it into Pappas Restaurant & Sports Bar. The menu boasted a diverse range of steak, pasta, and fresh seafood entrees, including his signature eight-ounce heavenly crab cake. Word spread quickly, and before long, his customer base grew exponentially.
Today, Pappas stands proud with not one, not two, but four restaurant locations, one express carryout, a shipping and catering department, and a food truck! It's a testament to Mark's dedication, perseverance, and commitment to serving the best seafood in town.
